Die Zukunft des Internets im Jahr 2025

Digital Life in 2025

The World Wide Web crossed its 25-year mark — offering tremendous digital resources and high rates of adoption that only continue to grow. The Internet has certainly come a long way since its inception, but what will the future hold? Today, the Pew Research Center released a report highlighting the predictions of experts from Internet and technology backgrounds on what digital life will look like in 2025.

Key Findings

Key findings and analysis from this joint study by Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project and Elon University’s Imagining the Internet Center include:

Information Sharing via the Internet Flows “Like Electricity”

Experts foresee interconnection over broadband as seamless and automatic. As Joe Touch, director at the University of Southern California’s Information Sciences Institute, described it: “We won’t think about ‘going online’ or ‘looking on the Internet’ for something — we’ll just be online, and just look.”

Internet of Things (IoT) Fuels Ambient Networked Environment

The ongoing growth and integration of increasingly sophisticated smart sensors, cameras, software, databases and big data centers will create a global information-sharing platform on an unprecedented scale that features innovative capabilities.

Augmented Reality & Wearables Provide Valuable Feedback

The use of augmented reality and wearable devices is expected to deliver more daily insights about how we live our lives. This is particularly valuable with respect to personal health. According to Aron Roberts, software developer at the University of California-Berkeley, “We may well see wearable devices and/or home and workplace sensors that can help us make ongoing lifestyle changes and provide early detection for disease risks, not just disease.”

Traditional Business Models Change Dramatically

The Web has fundamentally changed many businesses, such as the music industry, and transformed Internet innovations, including streaming, viral videos and more. This type of reinvention of 20th-century business models is expected to continue to unfold, from finance and entertainment, to publishing and education.

An Education Revolution

Education fueled by digital advances is expected to unleash considerable promise and potential for students around the globe. Hal Varian, chief economist for Google, said, “The biggest impact on the world will be universal access to all human knowledge. The smartest person in the world currently could well be stuck behind a plow in India or China. Enabling that person — and the millions like him or her — will have a profound impact on the development of the human race. Cheap mobile devices will be available worldwide, and educational tools like the Khan Academy will be available to everyone. This will have a huge impact on literacy and numeracy and will lead to a more informed and more educated world population.”
